Student Embroidery Examples
The embroidered pieces below were created during my Fall 2025 ENGL 1102 (English Composition II) course with the theme of Weaving/Writing at Georgia Tech. All students featured gave permission for me to include their work as part of my teaching portfolio and were given the option to be credited by name or anonymously.
For this assignment, students were given a two-day workshop on basic embroidery techniques; the class also discussed the specific affordances of embroidery as a medium, compared to other modes of communication. All required materials, including needles, embroidery floss, fabric, needle threaders, embroidery hoops, and tracing paper, were provided. Students were then invited to select their own target audience and message, then designed a pattern (with instructor support and feedback as needed) that would transmit the message to the intended audience via embroidery. Many opted to make gifts for friends and family, dorm decor or accessories to communicate elements of their own identity, or messages related to causes they care about. At the end of the assignment, students were invited to reflect not only on the rhetorical choices they made for their piece, but also on how completing the project helped them to think differently about the composition process more broadly, across multiple modes of communication.
***A note for former students: remember that you retain all rights to your work and that you can provide or revoke your consent for me to use your class assignments in my teaching portfolio at any time. If you’d like to do so, please just email me at mmoore368@gatech.edu.
